Experts from the HSE Continuing Education Centre, the Master's Programme 'Artificial Intelligence', and Yandex Education have developed and published a free math handbook in data analysis (in Russian). This is the seventh online publication in a series of digital self-study textbooks dedicated to specific IT areas.

The handbooks represent a new format of online textbooks that include several chapters for self-study and are available to all on the Yandex Education platform. The new math handbook is intended for those who want to understand the mathematical side of machine learning and deep learning algorithms. It is suitable for both beginners in higher mathematics and those who are already familiar with the basic concepts and want to deepen their knowledge.

The mathematics handbook in data analysis is an applied interactive tool that helps readers not only study theory, but also immediately apply the analysed topics via quizzes, self-study tasks, and code examples. The authors of the workbook include HSE University staff members Eldar Valitov, Albina Burlova, and Yury Sanochkin, while Elena Kantonistova led the team of authors.

‘My colleagues from Yandex and I felt that it would be very useful to study mathematics not in isolation, but in the context of the field it is applied to, as abstract concepts without a point of application are usually quickly forgotten. That's how we got the idea to create a math workbook in data analysis,’ said Elena Kantonistova, Associate Professor, Academic Supervisor of the HSE Master’s Programme in Artificial Intelligence, head of the team of authors. ‘While developing the handbook, we tried to present the material as simply as possible. If the reader feels fluent in the school curriculum and studied the basics of higher mathematics at a first-year university level, then they will easily understand the textbook material. It's also useful to know the basics of Python to work with the workbook, and that's all you need.’

Eldar Valitov

‘Data science is very popular nowadays, and more and more people want to understand what lies behind the concept of AI,’ says Eldar Valitov, lecturer at the joint department with Yandex at HSE University and one of the handbook’s authors. ‘Mathematics for data analysis will be a good foundation for immersion in the topic. The handbook is suitable for anyone who has a basic mathematical background, has studied the basics of programming, and is interested in modern mathematical trends. While working on the handbook, it was a big challenge for us to prepare materials with an emphasis on the fact that everything should be understandable to people with certain mathematical skills,’ added Eldar Valitov.

Two chapters have now been published in the online textbook: 'Introduction to Graph Theory’ and ‘Fundamentals of Mathematical Analysis’. The authors plan to add chapters on linear algebra, discrete mathematics (combinatorics), and probability theory.

In 2024, the HSE Faculty of Computer Science and Yandex Education also released a handbook on prompting, which teaches readers to work effectively with artificial intelligence tools and use neural networks to simplify and speed up the learning process.

‘Bots Are Simply Imitators, not Artists’: How to Distinguish Artificial Intellect from a Real Author

Today, text bots like ChatGPT are doing many tasks that were originally human work. In our place, they can rewrite ‘War and Peace’ in a Shakespearean style, write a thesis on Ancient Mesopotamia, or create a Valentine’s Day card. But is there any way to identify an AI-generated text and distinguish it from works done by a human being? Can we catch out a robot? The Deputy Head of the HSE School of Data Analysis and Artificial Intelligence, Professor of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science Vasilii Gromov explained the answer in his lecture ‘Catch out a Bot, or the Large-Scale Structure of Natural Intelligence’ for Znanie intellectual society.
